A Little Luge Action

February 18th, 2010 by Ken Thorne

I was up at the single man luge event at the winter olympics last weekend in Whistler. This sport is pure insanity, with recent events there attesting to this. Speeds reach 150km/hour or 90miles/hour at the finish line. That said, it would be a thrill to try, at a modest speed anyway. Low light, high speeds, and rain mixed with snow made for a challenging shoot but it was a total adrenaline rush trying to pan with these guys! You can get right in there next to the track. The speed and sound of the sled was incredible. Canon EOS 40D body, 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS, and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lenses used.

That does look insane. I like the variety of angles you shot from and the darkness of the spectators against the colorful slope in 1,4,&11

I don’t have tickets for any more events unfortunately but there are a lot of things going on in the city.
